SD58 Supported Programs
Students usually start meeting with High School Counsellors, Trades Coordinators, and WEX Coordinators in grade 10 and 11. Requirements and courses need to be planned to accommodate high school grad.
Youth Train in Trades
Students in their Grade 12 year earn Level 1 Foundations Certification by selecting from one of Approximately 15 Programs. SD58 will have approx. 12 to 16 seats available any given year. Programs may include: Auto Service Technician, Carpentry, Culinary Arts, Electrician, Heavy Equipment Operator, Heavy Mechanical, Welding etc.
Youth Explore Trades Sampler
Students sample several Trades programs during on linear blocks scheduled in their timetables at Merritt Secondary School.
Career Certificate Programs
Students in their Grade 12 year can be sponsored either in a mini credential (three courses) or 1 year Certificate Program Education Assistant, Early Childhood Education and health Care Assistant (years that they operate may alternate).
Youth Work in Trades
Students who find employment with a trades employer willing to sponsor a student as an apprentice can apply as early as 16 years of age. Students earn high school elective credits while working towards Red Seal Certification.
Work Experience (WEX)
Students can gain valuable work experience while earning high school Elective credits
Dual Credit Enrichment
Dual Credit Enrichment Program students can take up to 4 (2/semester) required University courses that lead to a specific Certificate, Diploma or Degree in their Grade 12 year while earning dual credits.
Students will be required to pay any additional student costs outside of tuition including required textbooks and supplies for each course enrolled. Students are required to be enrolled in two courses at their home school to be eligible.
